History

Faith Chapel in Lucketts, Virginia, has a rich and evolving history deeply connected to the local community. Originally founded as a Presbyterian Church in 1885, it served as a vital center for over a century.

From church to community hub

  • Early Years: The church was established in 1885, a pivotal point in the growth of Lucketts and nearby communities like Goresville and Black Swamp. Early records indicate land for a church in the Goresville community was secured in 1869, followed by the construction of a building by 1870. Further back, some sources suggest a land donation for a church as early as 1773, known as the "Black Swamp" church.

  • Challenges and Closure: The church faced declining attendance, leading to its closure in December 2015 after 130 years of weekly services. This closure was felt deeply by former members, whose families had historical ties to the chapel.

  • Rebirth as a Community Hub: Recognizing the importance of the historic building, the Presbyterian Church leaders decided against selling it and instead chose to keep it within the community. This led to its transformation into Faith Chapel Gathering Place, a third space for community building, emerging arts hub, and home of Lucketts Food Pantry and Messy Church.
